America loves a celebration, and so do we. On July 4, 2026, America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The moment will likely be a significant one and the fashion industry will certainly take part in the conversation. Women’s Wear Daily has kept its eye on fashion’s ups, downs and turnarounds since 1910, continuing to chronicle the conversation surrounding the industry from all angles. WWD’s July 1976 bicentennial special supplement, titled “The Changing American Woman: 200 Years of American Fashion” (the issue cover reprinted here), took a deep dive into the people, places and things that kept fashion at the forefront of the zeitgeist for two centuries. American fashion had already come a long way, and has even more since then. As the 250th anniversary approaches, WWD will of course commemorate the moment, so stay tuned for a timely celebration of the ongoing global impact and influence of American fashion.
