Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, is a member of the British royal family by way of her marriage in 2011 to Prince William.

As one of the most-watched women in the world, Middleton’s style has been under a microscope since she and Prince William began dating in 2003. Middleton and Prince William first met when they were students at the University of St. Andrews, where Middleton studied art history.

When the news broke that the two were dating, Middleton was known for her preppy, collegiate style. In college, she modeled in a student fashion show at St. Andrews that Prince William attended, and when the two became engaged her fashion choices were put under a microscope.

For the wedding, Middleton chose a custom white Alexander McQueen wedding gown with an ivory lace bodice and satin skirt and train designed by the brand’s then-creative director Sarah Burton. More than 100 million people tuned in to watch the wedding, through television and livestreaming.

The dress kicked off a decade-long relationship between Burton and Middleton.

While Middleton has solid high fashion relationships, she often wears high street brands too, including Zara, H&M and Uniqlo. Often, pieces she wears or products she’s seen using will quickly sell out — a side effect that’s become known as the “Kate Middleton effect.”
