In a time of upheaval, when it would be simpler to put sustainability on the back burner to focus on profitability and survival, the case for continued investment in people and planet is clear.
Sourcing Journal’s Sustainability Report dives into the global story of the industry’s progress and its imperfections. We check in with Aussie brand Rowie the Label, Estonian designer Reet Aus and the UK’s EDN to hear how they are choosing less impactful business models and materials such as upcycling, plastic-free production and conscious scaling. In Ghana, Kantamanto Market paints one of the clearest pictures of fashion’s overproduction and race to the bottom, as secondhand sellers who bid on bales of clothes shipped from the Global North must discard a plethora of unsellable low-quality goods. Stateside, New Orleans nonprofit RicRack is addressing waste in its own way by taking clothing donations that stock a secondhand storefront and serve as materials for its community sewing classes.
While some companies have taken up the mantle, soon everyone will have no choice but to comply. Sustainability is quickly turning from a voluntary action into a requirement as legislation regulates the fashion industry and beyond.
